Representation

50 cent - candy shop: presentation of women

The presentation of women in the video “candy shop” by 50 cent is that they are all dirty women who basically offer themselves on a plate and crave sex. This is a negative representation of women as not all women are like that.  For this music genre – hip-hop/ RnB – it is completely the right representation.  It is a convention for the genre – women are always seen as outgoing, walking around in little or no clothes and only interested in men and what they have to offer.
From the first moment 50 cent walks into the house he is greeted by a women scarcely dressed saying “welcome to the candy shop” this suggests that the women are selling themselves and see themselves as candy. He then starts to walk up the stairs and all the women in the “shop” give him “the look” suggesting they want him. This portrays women as easy and almost gold-diggers as 50 cent is rich “roles up in a sports car” and want him for his money, therefore willing to do anything.
