“How does the journalist use written language to appeal to the target audience?
The writer Kevin Cummins uses specific language to appeal to the target audience right from the start of the article – for example “live solo debut” this would straight away attract the target audience who are into music and live gigs also “one of the most extraordinary gigs I’ve ever seen” makes us as a target audience want to read more.
The overall tone and register of the article is excited and full of energy. Kevin seems very excited about the whole gig as the states at the start “real sense of excitement” this appeal’s to the target audience because at live gigs there is a real sense of excitement and as readers we can also feel the sense of excitement through the tone and register.
“Here, you have it, Kevin, it’s yours” – Kevin uses direct quotes because it makes the target audience feel as though they are involved in the gig. Also this particular quote will definitely appeal to the target audience because every fan wants to have something from the band members and the fact the writer got handed the guitarists guitar is a massive ordeal that every fan would be jealous of.
Kevin uses descriptive language to tell the target audience about each photo. For example under a picture of four fans Kevin tells us about the fans being “typical fan fanatical following Morrissey had”
The writer uses plenty of images in this article, this is because he was very excited about the whole gig and just wanted to show it off, the double page spreads are both taken up by pictures with just a small amount of text to explain each picture. Kevin does this to appeal to the target audience – fans love to see live gigs, especially if they were there and if they flicked onto this page they would immediately take interest.
